The business landscape is changing. Technology is revolutionising many industries, making them more ef cient, more competitive and more accessible to consumers. The insurance sector is no exception, and local IT firm, CDL, has been behind many of the innovations which have transformed the way insurance is bought, priced and administered.
FOUNDED IN 1977 by husband and wife, Tom and Jessica Hogg, CDL has grown from a living room start-up to one of
the largest employers in the borough, with a workforce of over 550 people. Following the opening of the state-of-the-art The Codeworks building at its Strata Campus on Kings Reach Business Park, CDL is looking to the future and aims to power insurance transactions in every home and business by 2024.
But what has powered this significant growth?
General insurance is extremely competitive, and CDL has always stayed true to its mission of helping its customers win through technology. Its multi-channel strategy has enabled retailers
to improve the consumer experience through faster access to quotes, simpler purchasing processes and online self-service. CDL has also spearheaded developments to reduce fraud and to enable new types of insurance products, such as telematics insurance, which bases premiums on real-time data on how people actually drive.
As a result, CDL software powers the businesses of household insurance brands such as esure broker, MoneySupermarket.com and Tesco Bank. The company has also diversified its services, launching what is now a market-leading consumer vehicle history service: mycarcheck.com.
Silicon Valley spirit
This journey has seen CDL enjoy significant growth itself. Over the past year, it has created 70 new jobs and anticipates similar growth in 2016. Its workforce covers all IT disciplines: software development, analytics, quality assurance, engineering and service professionals. CDL hosts regular open evenings for prospective employees and enjoys links with local colleges and universities through its apprentice and graduate schemes.
“At the heart of CDL’s growth lies our culture of innovation, creativity, quality and fun,” explains Gary Johnson, Managing Director of the CDL Group. “We’ve created time and space for curiosity-driven research, and our software development squads follow ‘agile’ principles, which encourage creativity and cross- discipline collaboration you could look here.”
In 2012, CDL purchased the remaining land adjacent to its Strata House headquarters to secure space for future expansion. With the aim of creating a truly outstanding work environment accessible via central transport links, CDL has transformed the site to create a tech campus with state-of-the-art workspaces, recreational facilities and landscaped grounds which make the best of the riverside location. The Codeworks, a three-storey office development commissioned to house its growing workforce, was officially opened in May 2015, and Strata House has recently been refurbished to include a new restaurant for employees.
CDL has also looked beyond its boundaries to extend its ethos of integrity, sustainability and partnership into the local community. For example, it worked with environmental charity, Groundworks UK, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and Transport for Greater Manchester to improve the public pathway alongside the river Mersey. The project involved clearance and replanting by CDL volunteers, surface and lighting improvements and the provision of seating and a picnic area, resulting in a route to be enjoyed by local commuters and residents.
CDL also operates the CDL Fund, which awards grants to a number of Stockport-based community projects. Johnson elaborates: “Since we started the fund in 2012, we have assisted over 100 grassroots projects, and earlier this year we won Forever Manchester’s Corporate Supporter of the Year award.”
After over 30 years of growth, CDL shows no sign of slowing down, and the company is committed to ensuring that this expansion translates into positive opportunities for those who live and work in Stockport.
